ODE TO

GRETA

for αὐλός, Ennanga, χορεια & batterie

Written by Mr. TAGAWA

Welcome to Nekko Music

The Los Angeles based music publisher of the Ode To Greta by Rick M. Tagawa.

Nekko Music hopes to foment action against climate change while reviving music literacy. Think of the Ode to Greta as a roadmap for climate activism and music education.

Percussion redefines music and dance by underscoring thought. The sound component of words is highlighted under a barrage of tapping, banging and hitting things. Ancient Greeks defined music as percussion music and musicians as percussionists. The chorus uses rhythm to synchronize two different lines of lyrics thus presenting two thoughts at the same time. Each is accented in three different ways.

This is how music was used in Ancient Greece. The ode, associated with war and armies, was sung before and after battles. The ode affirms Orpheus’ reputation as the first priest when he assisted the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece. Here he is reputed to have substituted animal sacrifice with an altar of fire and an Ode.

The Dalai Lama has written a book A Call for Revolution, A Vision for the Future and in it he asks everyone to work together to secure our collective survival. We must heed his call. The Ode to Greta traces its lineage to Robert Sonner’s compilation of 100 Timpani Studies by Otto Kristufek.

So practice, be kind and sing your hearts out.
